🌞 Litha – Honoring the Longest Day of the Year

Litha, also called Midsummer or the Summer Solstice, is one of my favorite moments on the Wheel of the Year. On this powerful day—usually June 20th or 21st—the sun reaches its highest point in the sky, gifting us the longest day and shortest night.

As the zodiac shifts into Cancer, we feel the vibrant energy of the season wash over us—warmth, abundance, joy, and the spark of life itself.

🔥 A Time of Fire and Celebration

Litha is one of the four great fire festivals. For thousands of years, people have marked this day with bonfires, dancing, and heartfelt celebrations. Every culture, in every corner of the world, has found its own way to honor the power of the sun at its peak.

In folklore, this is when the Oak King triumphs over the Holly King, ushering in the full strength of summer. Stories tell of people gathering to offer prayers to solar deities like the Irish Lugh, the Greek Apollo, and the Egyptian Ra. The Triple Goddess herself steps into her Mother aspect—nurturing all life in full bloom.

✨ Magic, Faeries, and Sacred Moments

Litha is also a time when the veil between worlds feels especially thin. It’s said this is the best day to commune with the Faerie Folk—just remember to approach them with respect and a dash of caution.

Look beneath the trees or among the wildflowers; you might catch a flicker of their presence if your heart is open and your spirit curious.

💛 A Personal Celebration

Litha has always held a special place in my heart. In fact, it’s when I married my own Sun God—my husband, Ray—under the radiant Strawberry Moon on June 20th, 2024.

Growing up in Sweden, Midsummer was (and still is) the biggest holiday of the year. As a child, I’d spend the day binding fresh flower crowns, decorating our family altar with herbs and blossoms in white, gold, and yellow, and dancing under the endless twilight. Those traditions still fill my soul with joy.

🌿 Harvests, Rituals, and Flower Medicine

For me and Mimi’s Moon Medicine, this is one of the busiest seasons. So many of my favorite plant allies—Rose, Lavender, St. John’s Wort, Calendula—are ready to be gathered, honored, and transformed into tinctures and oils.

After months of growth and tending, Midsummer is that moment to pause, breathe, and soak in the sunshine before harvest season begins in earnest.

Some of my favorite ways to celebrate Litha:
🌼 Craft a flower crown with fresh blooms
🌼 Make sun water charged with intention
🌼 Brew Elderflower cordial to sip on warm evenings
🌼 Greet the sunrise and sunset with gratitude
🌼 Light a bonfire and set intentions for abundance
🌼 Decorate your altar with bright flowers and golden candles

🌻 Embrace the Light

Litha is an invitation to open your heart to joy, to honor your growth, and to celebrate the life all around you. However you choose to mark this turning point, may your day be filled with warmth, love, and the radiant power of the sun.

Blessed Litha from my little apothecary to yours. 🌞✨
